Message from the Principal

We have a lot going on this week. Reading Fair boards are due tomorrow, so we can set up tomorrow afternoon and judging occurs on Tuesday. We hope you can come by from 5:30-6:30pm on Tuesday for a cookie reception and to see all the amazing work our students have been doing. If you do, please stay for our PTA meeting, which will be held in the staff room in lieu of the cafeteria. As always, our meeting will be dual-language in Spanish and English.

Also coming up on Tuesday this week, we are hosting an RCSD Parent Education Series event from 8:15-9:45am in the staff room. The Self-Driven Child: The science and sense of giving your kids more control over their lives with authors Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson offers a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids and teens. Parents and community members are welcome to this free event, and Spanish interpretation will be available. For more information and to RSVP, go to https://selfdrivenchild2020rcsd.eventbrite.com and for any questions, please contact Charlene Margot, the founder and director of The Parent Education Series  at cmargot@csmconsulting.net.

We have tryouts coming up for the second annual Variety Show coming up on February 10. Last year’s event was a huge success, and I know we will have an exciting show this year too with even more talent. Students may perform on their own or in a group, but there is only one performance per child. Performances may be up to three minutes long. Permission slips went home last week, but there are extras in the office if it didn’t make it home. There are a few key dates you will need to put on your calendar if your child wishes to participate:

  • Tryouts on Monday, February 10, 2-4:30pm
  • Mandatory Rehearsal on Monday, February 24, 2-4:30pm
  • Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday, March 10, 1-3:30pm
  • Variety Show on Friday, March 13, 5:30pm

While the Variety Show will be at the McKinley Auditorium, all tryouts and rehearsals will be in the Roosevelt cafeteria. All the tryouts and rehearsals are mandatory. Students who cannot attend (unless due to illness) will not participate in the show. If your child is using music, they must come to the tryouts with the music on a USB drive.

Unfortunately, I need to change the date of my Coffee with the Principal/Cafecito con la directora yet again due to a conflict with 100s Day celebrations on the upper campus. I would love you to join me for a Valentines’ coffee on February 14. I look forward to providing an update on what’s happening at Roosevelt and hear from many of you. As always, this will be a dual-language event in Spanish and English.

We only have a couple of prospective parent tours left, as School of Choice applications are due February 12. If you are available on February 5, we would appreciate the help. The tour will be in the morning from 8:30-9:45am. Please consider signing up using this link.

Image result for kids 49ers fansAs many of you know, I am a HUGE sports fan, and our local NFL team is going to the Super Bowl! For one day only, I will relax the “no red” policy. On Friday, January 31, students may wear 49er gear to show their Bay Area spirit! (Just to clarify, no other red is allowed beyond college clothing and 49er gear—and I suppose I will be a good sport and allow Kansas City Chiefs clothing too!)

A reminder that in less than two weeks on February 6, we have a SUPER minimum day for all students, with school dismissing at 11:45am. The office will close early too, as all staff will be going to trainings that afternoon.

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

– Principal Tina Mercer
