Message from the Principal

I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful day celebrating the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Image may contain: one or more people, people standing and outdoorAt Roosevelt, we had a number of amazing volunteers from the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition participating in a day of service at Roosevelt beautifying our school. I hope you notice the repainted rainbow stairs, and we are soon to have new letters and numbers in our upper campus quad. A special thank you also to the wonderful Roosevelt families who participated.

Last Thursday night, we had our Family Vision Night. I posted pictures to our Facebook page to show some of the work we were able to do. Families came together to talk about our vision for Roosevelt graduates, staff, leadership, and community, as well as reflect on the environment and core beliefs and values we share. I particularly appreciate the incredible conversations I overheard as parents shared their visions for our collective future with each other.

Is your child a budding singer, dancer, comedian, or musician? Do they have another talent they would love to share? We would love them to participate in our second annual Variety Show coming up on March 13. Last year was a huge success, and I know we will have an exciting event this year too with even more talent on show. Students may perform on their own or in a group, but there is only one performance per child. Performances may be up to three minutes long. Permission slips will be going home in this Thursday’s folder, but there are a few key dates you will need to put on your calendar if your child wishes to participate:

  • Tryouts on Monday, February 10, 2-4:30pm
  • Mandatory Rehearsal on Monday, February 24, 2-4:30pm
  • Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday, March 10, 1-3:30pm.

While the Variety Show will be at the McKinley Auditorium, all tryouts and rehearsals will be in the Roosevelt cafeteria. All the tryouts and rehearsals are mandatory. Students who cannot attend (unless due to illness) will not participate in the show. If your child is using music, they must come to the tryouts with the music on a USB drive.

Coming up on Tuesday, January 28 from 8:15-9:45am, we are hosting a RCSD Parent Education Series event, The Self-Driven Child: The science and sense of giving your kids more control over their lives with authors Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson. The Self-Driven Child offers a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids and teens. Parents and community members are welcome to this free event, and Spanish interpretation will be available. For more information, go to https://selfdrivenchild2020rcsd.eventbrite.com and for any questions, please contact Charlene Margot, the founder and director of The Parent Education Series  at cmargot@csmconsulting.net.

After school enrichment programs are starting up this week. We have a number of exciting new options available too for all different grade levels. All after-school enrichment programs take place in the upper campus classrooms.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at Coffee with the Principal/Cafecito con la directora on February 7. I had to move this event from January 31. I look forward to providing an update on what’s happening at Roosevelt and hear from many of you. As always, this will be a dual-language event in Spanish and English.

Our parent tours continue to go well. We still need parents to help out as tour guides, so please let us know if you are interested. Even if you can just help on one particular day, that would be very much appreciated. All tours will be in the morning from 8:30-9:45am. Please consider signing up using this link.

As many of you know, I am a HUGE sports fan, and our local NFL team is going to the Super Bowl! For one day only, I will relax the “no red” policy. On Friday, January 31, students may wear 49er gear to show their Bay Area spirit!

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

– Principal Tina Mercer
