Message from the Principal

I hope to see many of you at our Coffee with the Superintendent tomorrow, Monday, October 15 in the Roosevelt Library. Dr. John Baker and Michelle Remond will be doing a short presentation and then will be open to questions. Up for discussion will be the direction of Redwood City School District over the coming years. For those of you who can’t make it but would still like to hear from Dr. Baker and the Board of Trustees, there will be a special community forum meeting on Tuesday, October 16 at the McKinley Institute of Technology auditorium at 7pm. No decisions about future directions will be made until the end of November, however, the Board and Dr. Baker appreciate hearing from our families.

Thank you to all of you who returned your School Site Council ballots. Monday is a busy day, as we have our second Site Council meeting tomorrow at 6pm in the Staff Room.

This Thursday, we will be participating in the statewide earthquake drill known as the Great California Shakeout. The students will be reminded to drop, cover, and hold until given the all clear message.

I’d like to respond to a question that continues to arise around the new volunteer policy, especially as it pertains to field trips. Unless specifically asked by a teacher to accompany your child (generally only due to behavior or health concerns), any parent who goes on a field trip is expected to act as a chaperone. As such, you will need to follow the protocol of fingerprinting and being TB tested prior to going on one of your child’s school field trips. Our field trips are educational experiences for your child, not a family day out. If you do not wish to go through this process, you are welcome to participate in other activities in your child’s classroom.

Halloween is coming up at the end of the month. We’re excited to host Spooktacular Bingo on Friday October 26th from 6-8pm. And on October 31, we will be having a costume parade around the school starting at 8:15am. If your child wishes to participate, please have them come to school in costume, but ensure they bring regular clothes to change into afterwards. The parade will end around 9:15am, and while students will be allowed to wear free dress that day, they will need to remove their costumes. For students who do not celebrate Halloween, they can be in the library during this time. At the conclusion of the parade, they will be returning to their classrooms. Many classes will be having Fall-themed activities on this day, so please check in with your classroom teacher(s) about their plans to see how you can help out.
