Message from the Principal

Following up from the parent education series last month, the video of the talk at Menlo Atherton High School is now available to watch. The new video of Dr. Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson in The Self-Driven Child has posted! Visit the YouTube and Vimeo channels and follow the Parent Education Series on Instagram and Facebook for the latest parenting news, research, and events.

We are seeking parent and community volunteers interested in helping us develop a new corporate partnership program for Roosevelt School. This program will aim to direct any local company interested in supporting our school toward the most impactful initiatives. In the first phase, we’d like to tap into the brainpower of the community by hosting two brainstorming sessions. The goal of these sessions will be to develop ideas and approaches for high impact support initiatives, which could range from team volunteering projects to corporate grants to employee donation drives. These will take place on Thursday, February 27 at 8:15am in the staff room, and Monday, March 2 at 6:00pm, also in the staff room. Join for one or both by RSVPing using  this link. If you have any questions or ideas prior to the sessions, please contact Tom Gierke at tgierke@gmail.com.

I haven’t received an updated timeline on the PG&E work that is being done on Vera Ave. Despite being told that it would minimally impact pick up and drop off, we were not quite so lucky. Since they started the work early, I am hoping they also finish early. But at the latest, the work will conclude by this Saturday.

Image result for parent teacher conferenceI’d like to remind everyone again that that parent/teacher conferences begin the week of March 9. The entire week will be minimum days for kindergarten through 8th grade. (All kindergarten students will be Early Birds that week.) Parent teacher conferences at this time of the year are not required, and teachers will just reach out to parents if they have concerns. Equally, if you have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher(s) to conference with them.

RCSD families are invited to attend the upcoming parent education event on Thursday, February 27 at 7pm at Woodside High School MUR, 199 Churchill Ave, Woodside, titled “Creating Gender Inclusive Environments for Children & Teens”. Admission is free, and snacks will be provided. To RSVP for this event, go to: https://genderspectrum2020woodside.eventbrite.com. Spanish interpretation will be available.

A mandatory Variety Show rehearsal is being held this week. It begins at 2pm for K-2nd and 2:20pm for 3rd-8th grades. Rehearsal will most likely run until 3:30pm. Dress rehearsal is on March 10, and the actual show is on Friday, March 13 at 6pm at the MIT auditorium.

A few kindergarten parents have reached out with some questions and concerns, and I would like the opportunity for an open discussion. We are meeting on Tuesday before the PTA meeting at 5:30pm in the cafeteria. The meeting is open to any parents from any grade.

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

– Principal Tina Mercer

Corporate Outreach Program

Image result for corporate outreachWe need ideas! We are putting together a committee to help bring in corporate volunteers to help our school. We have two meetings coming up to share ideas.
Basic Overview: Companies have volunteers that want to help at local schools. They go all the way to San Francisco instead of staying here because they don’t know what we need help with!
GOAL: These two meetings are to come up with detailed volunteer opportunities ready to be implemented (e.g. daily/weekly reading volunteers, library organization, classroom helpers etc.). Let’s get this important ball rolling!
Mark your calendars: Thurs. Feb 27 @ 8:15 AM and March 2 @ 6 PM in Staff Room (14)
PLEASE RSVP WITH THIS LINK!
