Congratulations are in order…

Roosevelt’s School Garden Now an Official Wildlife Habitat!
Roosevelt’s hard working garden volunteers have been making big changes in Roosevelt’s school garden and it is now designated as an Official Wildlife Habitat™ site with The National Wildlife Federation.

The NWF certification involves building a habitat for wildlife including food, water, and shelter components.  So far, the volunteers have committed to gardening without toxic pesticides/fertilizers, added bird feeders, added flowering plants and herbs/vegetables, and they will be adding a few more water stations for butterflies, bees, insects, and birds.  Benches were also added so that the students have an area to sit and be able to write down their observations. After all of this work, they have even loftier goals. A big thank you to the following people for their dedication to our school’s garden: Betsy Colby from the Master Gardeners and Roosevelt volunteers Megan Goulden, Suzanne Buerchner, Emmy Johnson, Kathy Kostas, Kristin Palmer and Howard Smith.

If you are interested in helping out with the garden, there will be “Open Garden” lunches on March 4, 18, and April 1st for parents to visit and work in the garden, or see what the volunteers are doing.  Volunteers will be helping out and working with small groups of students between 12:00-1:30.

If you would like to donate something to the garden, they are currently looking for donations of owl houses and bird houses, like this owl house.
