4/5 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a relaxing and safe spring break and this finds you and your families well-rested and healthy. I was able to fully disconnect for almost a week, and I have to say that it totally recharged my batteries. I am ready for the next 2½ months and more importantly, I’m excited to welcome back more students at the end of this week. With over 360 students on campus, Roosevelt is definitely going to feel more like a real school campus again.

Rather than go into detail about the spring reopening, I am including a link to the last Raccoon Reporter newsletter from March 26 with all the relevant information. We do have an optional parent question and answer session tomorrow (Monday) night at 6pm, if you still have a few questions. As always, it will be a dual-language meeting in English and Spanish.

Sea Star Session This Wed @ Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay Tide Pools, CA |Wanna get up close and personal with a sea star? This Wednesday, April 7th features an unusually low tide at 3pm and nature-loving bionerd (and third grade mom) Brooke will be out tide pooling at Pilar Point in Half Moon Bay starting at 2pm. This is, of course, socially distant and mask wearing self-exploration but a great opportunity to not miss! Learn about local inverts as Brooke shares her enthusiasm loudly enough for people to hear five miles away due to her inability to speak in an indoor voice. Download iNaturalist and upload pics to identify and explore on your own!

Recommended time: 2PM
Park in the tidepool parking lot (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VfrgFfFacqCMoG1YA) and walk out to the tidepools around the point.

Happy anemone finding! Wear shoes that can get wet and protect from sharp rocks. Bring dry clothes to change into. Hope to see some curious Raccoons out there!

3/22 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Roosevelt Families,

SPRING BREAK - No School April 19th thru April 26 | Dolland Elementary SchoolSpring break is only a week away. I am really looking forward to disconnecting from technology for a while and getting outside and enjoying the spring weather. (I’m hoping it doesn’t turn rainy on us!)

Can you believe it’s been over a year since the pandemic took over our lives? I do think it’s been the longest year ever, and yet the year seems to be flying. We are already at the end of March of 2021 with only a little over a couple of months left of school. I would like to highlight a few things from this week’s Raccoon Reporter:

Super Minimum Day on March 23

Tuesday, March 23 is a super minimum day while teachers attend training in the afternoon. For students in distance learning, all synchronous instruction will conclude by 12 o’clock, and students will complete their day with asynchronous work. For in-person instruction, there will be no afternoon classes at school. All students will need to remain at home for the day and participate in asynchronous work. The exception will be students in the TK/K and 6th grade learning hubs at school. They will continue as usual.

School Reopening

We have sent emails to all families who are affected by our spring reopening in April. If you did not receive an email, it means your child’s current schedule will remain in place. We are very excited to be welcoming all our teachers back to campus and seeing many more of your children.

The student orientations next week are for those who are returning to campus in April for the first time. These are for students only. Parents are to drop their child off at the appropriate gate and pick up their child on time.

Safety First

Our neighbors on Windsor Ave (street at the Vera Ave. crosswalks) have shared some traffic and safety concerns with us. Some drivers are making u-turns through the crosswalk, sometimes through both crosswalks in one turn and sometimes almost coming up onto the corner sidewalk. Not only is this illegal, it is extremely dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers. Please also make sure that you do not double park on Vera Ave blocking other drivers from turning onto the street from Windsor Ave. It is very important that we are safe and courteous to our neighbors and follow all road rules. We need to set good examples for our children.

I’d also like to remind parents to turn right when you exit the upper parking lot on McGarvey Ave. The exit is for right turns only, and it is clearly marked.

Spring Break Travel?

Are you dreaming of a beach vacation? Disneyland? Foreign travel? Me too! However, the California Department of Health recommends that all non-essential travel be limited to 120 miles from home. They also recommend that if you are traveling beyond this distance as well as to other states and countries, you self-quarantine for 10 days upon your return. Please keep this in mind when planning your spring break. See this flyer for more information.

Redwood City Sports

Redwood City Parks and Recreation is opening up their spring sports program. For more information, please see this flyer for details.

I hope to see you on Tuesday evening at the PTA meeting. If I don’t, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very safe and relaxing spring break. As always, mask up!

Girl Scout Cookies

Last chance for cookies! Get your favorites before they’re gone! Thin Mints and Samoas taste great from the freezer or stock up to share soon with grandparents as the vaccination roll out continues. Troop 62163, the majority of whom are 2nd and 3rd grade students here at Roosevelt can deliver to you. Teachers and school staff can have their cookies delivered to the school office and families in RWC can have cookies dropped at their homes.  Cookies can also be donated to local food banks and military troops if you’d like to support our Girl Scouts but don’t have a sweet tooth; or shipped to family and friends for a sweet surprise.  All transactions can be done at the link below.  Thank you for helping the girls reach their goals.

3/15 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

School Reopening

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey. It looks as if we will have over 150 more students back on campus in April. We are excited to see all our teachers returning too!

We will be reaching out to you on Monday and Tuesday next week to advise you of your child’s placement, and hopefully at that time, we can advise you of your child’s on-campus lessons prior to April 8.

Childcare Option

If you are looking for a childcare option, Peninsula Covenant Church offers School Age Child Care (PCC SACC). They have a few opportunities you may want to consider, although at this time, they are not offering transportation from Roosevelt. For more information about any of these programs, please contact PCC directly at (650) 365-1946 or https://www.pccsacc.com.

  • All-Day Distance Learning Support (approx. 8:00 am to 5:30 pm) These groups are intended for families not returning to school campuses, but still needing child care. These groups are also strictly for children not exposed to other cohorts/pods/hubs.
  • Early Bird After School Camp (approx.11:30 am to 5:30 pm) These groups are intended for children enrolled in AM in-person options at schools.
  • After School Camp (approx. 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm) These groups are intended for children enrolled in PM in-person options at schools.

McGarvey Ave Parking Lot

I can’t stress enough about our safety concerns regarding parents exiting the upper campus parking lot and turning left. The exit is for right turns only, and it is clearly marked. Please obey the signs. This is a safety issue, and I know you want to keep our children and neighbors safe.

Parent Teacher Conferences Minimum Days

A reminder that due to parent-teacher conferences next week, in-person classes and synchronous instruction will conclude earlier for parent teacher conferences. Classes in full distance learning will end at 1:45pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Those classes in-person in the afternoons will end at 2pm (with the exception of Ms. Krooss’s 3rd grade, which will end at regular time).

We ask that if you have a conference, please use the link provided to you or your child and be on-time. Many of our teachers have conferences set up to immediately follow each other.

Thinking of Traveling Over Spring Break?

The California Department of Health recommends that all non-essential travel be limited to 120 miles from home. They also recommend that all people traveling beyond this distance as well as to other states and countries self-quarantine for 10 days upon your return. It is important that we minimize the spread of the coronavirus and its variants. Please keep this in mind when planning your spring break. See this flyer for more information.

School Site Council

We will be meeting Monday at 6:30pm. As always, you are welcome to join us.

3/8 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe we are two-thirds of the way through the school year and that this next week marks the anniversary of the last week of “normalcy” prior to the move to distance learning. It’s been an interesting year, but I’m proud of the work our students, teachers, staff, and families have done and continue to do. It has not been easy for anyone, but I like to think that we will come out of this more resilient and flexible than ever before. All of our lives have been upended in major ways.

School Reopening

Many of you will have seen news of Governor Newsom’s new school mandate to open schools. We are looking at expanding our in-person instructional offering starting at the end of March, just prior to Spring Break. A survey went out on Friday to parents of all students who have a child currently in distance learning. We will need to move very quickly in this process, so we are asking that all surveys are returned by Tuesday at 5pm. If you cannot find the link the survey in your email, I have attached it here.

Recognizing that many of you may still have questions after receiving the survey, I am holding an optional dual-language (English and Spanish) parent meeting for those of you who have questions on Monday evening at 6pm.

Meeting ID: 891 2287 1830
Passcode: Roosevelt

A couple of things I do want to make clear if you are interested in bringing your child back to school for in-person instruction:

  • Your child will only be at school for approximately 3 hours/day (8:30-11:15am OR 12:30-3:15pm). The remainder of instruction will be asynchronous work to be completed at home.
  • All students still have the option for distance learning.
  • We will not be able to guarantee at this time an AM or PM model to any parent.
  • Finally, we will not have the capacity at Roosevelt to significantly expand our before or after-school care beyond where we are now, as we will not have available spaces.

McGarvey Ave Parking Lot

It has come to my attention that when some parents exit the upper parking lot, they are ignoring the sign and turning left. The exit is for right turns only, and it is clearly marked. This is a safety issue, and I know you want to keep our children and neighbors safe as well. A small amount of inconvenience is worth that. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Second trimester parent teacher conferences will take place the week of March 15. Each of these days will be a minimum day, but this may look different for some classes. Classes in full distance learning will end at 1:45pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Those classes in-person in the afternoons will end at 2pm (with the exception of Ms. Krooss’s 3rd grade, which will end at regular time).

As always, stay safe and wear a mask.

3/1 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

Can you believe that March is here already? We are all pretty excited that vaccines are now being given to educators, and many of our staff have received at least their first shot. (I got mine this week!) This means that we are hoping to expand our in-person instruction offerings after spring break, so if your child is in distance learning, please look for a survey coming out in the next couple of weeks.

New and Improved Office

We are excited to say that we have moved back into our office space and it looks very different! There are still a few finishing touches that need to be made, but starting this week, the main entrance to the school is through the office on Vera Ave. Please bear with us as we get everything in place, as we are still unpacking boxes.

Book Fair

The Roosevelt Scholastic Book Fair is happening now through March 7. Our customized Roosevelt Elementary homepage features:

  • A fully Virtual Fair where you can browse over 200 titles by grade and meet popular authors.
  • Direct access to over 6,000 additional titles with family-friendly prices, at the Scholastic online store
  • Every dollar you spend benefits Roosevelt directly (25% back in rewards!)

Check out some of the great titles that will be available at the fair with this Interactive Book Fair Flyer, and you can purchase books through the shopping portal.

Coffee with the Superintendent

Thank you to those of you who joined Dr. John Baker, our superintendent, and Alisa MacAvoy, president of the Board of Trustees, on Wednesday this week for Coffee with the Superintendent. If you were not able to attend and would like to know what was discussed, please see this recording of the event. The recording will be available for the next two weeks.

Parent Teacher Conferences

I want to let everyone know that the second trimester parent teacher conferences will take place during the week of March 15. Each of these days will be a minimum day, but this may look different for some classes. Classes in full distance learning will most likely end at 1:45pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Those teaching in-person in the afternoons will have a different schedule that will be shared next week.

Conferences in the second trimester are not held for every student. They are only for those students who are struggling in some manner or at parent request.

Garden Kits

If you have a TK-5th grade Roosevelt student in distance learning and were not able to pick up your child’s garden kit on the distribution days, please contact your child’s teacher about the best way to pick it up. Also, check out Elexis’s website for how to best use the garden kit.

Wishing you all a wonderful and safe week ahead.

2/22 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a relaxing and safe Presidents’ Week break. I know a lot of our staff enjoyed the week away from screens for a while. Overall, the numbers of COVID cases in San Mateo County are lowering, which is great news, and there is hope that we may be able to move into the red tier soon as well. Our staff members are due to be vaccinated soon (and in fact, some are already able to do so this week), which is encouraging in the effort to reduce the spread of the virus.

A few things to keep on your radar:

 Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Coffee with the Principal | Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory SchoolI hope this finds you all well. I hope to see many of you at Coffee with the Principal this coming Friday at 8:00am.  It is an informal gathering, and unfortunately we are unable to provide coffee—it’s a little hard to do that virtually.

I want to give everyone advance notice that on Tuesday, February 9, teachers will be receiving some training in the afternoon.

This year we also have a week-off school in February. There will be no school from Monday, February 15 through Friday, February 19, as our students celebrate Presidents’ Week.  I know we can’t travel or do any of the other fun things we would like to do, but it will be nice to disconnect for the week.

Please keep safe and wear a mask.

1/25 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful week last week, as we welcomed eleven classrooms of students back to Roosevelt. We are adding another nine classrooms this coming week, and the school definitely feels more like a school.

I provided this information last week, but I wanted to give it you again. Each day, parents will need to complete a wellness survey for their child prior to arriving at school. It can be completed online in English or Spanish or as a paper copy. (I recommend the online version to save a few trees.) Also, all parents and students will need to sign the Addendum to the Student Handbook.

I hope to see many of you at the PTA meeting on Tuesday evening and at our upcoming Coffee with the Principal on Friday, February 5.

As COVID cases in the Bay Area continue to be high, please be safe and healthy, and wear a mask.

1/18 – This Week at Roosevelt.

Dear Families,

I hope you had a restful and safe long weekend. This week is definitely a big one on a couple of fronts. We are welcoming students back to campus tomorrow and on Wednesday, the United States inaugurates a new president. Here’s hoping both are smooth transitions for everyone.

Bangor school department, city leaders focus on safe school reopeningAs we welcome students back, it is important for parents of returning students to review all of these linked documents. Each day, parents will need to complete a wellness survey for their child prior to arriving at school. It can be completed online in English or Spanish or as a paper copy. Also, all parents and students will need to sign the Addendum to the Student Handbook.

With the exception of students in one of our learning hubs for TK/K, 4th grade, and 6th grade, students will only be on campus Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday remains an asynchronous distance learning day. Also, all students with the exception of our 6th graders will only be at school for half a day (either morning or afternoon).

I’d like to end with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Please be safe and healthy, and wear a mask.

Tina
