Chess instruction offered during lunch recess for grades 2 – 8 in the YMCA room

Come and join us at 6:30pm for a night of Amusement Park Science with activities applicable for all grade levels (K-8). The spins, drops, and twists of amusement parks have thrilled both kids and adults for ages. But, how often do we take the time to think about the science involved in the loop-de-loops of roller coasters, the vertical motion of the carousel, and the wackiness of Fun Houses? In this family science night, children and parents together will explore gravity as they create miniature roller coasters, experience the power of springs as they make their own pinball machines, and test their strength while learning about air and water power.

Fundraising…
We’re a bit more than half way through the school year, and there are only a few fundraisers left (Easter/Spring Candy & SJ Earthquakes game tickets). The PTA still has A LOT left to pay for this year and they need money in the bank for the August payment to Art 4 All for next year’s art classes. If you are receiving monthly pledge reminders from the PTA, please send in your payments. If you haven’t made a direct donation or haven’t paid your pledged amount, please do so! So far, the PTA has been able to pay for: field trips ($13,000 or $20 per student), Art 4 All for every student ($20,000 or $35 per student), teacher reimbursements ($120 per teacher), Family Fun Nights ($500 per event), after school enrichment ($10,000), Outdoor Education ($10,000) and Yosemite ($10,000). If you want to see the PTA budget or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact reftreasurer@gmail.com

The PTA is still asking each family to donate $100 per child to our school to pay for the above expenses and so much more! Checks can be made out to Roosevelt PTA or you may pay by credit card in the school office or use the Donate button on the parent blog at www.rooseveltparents.com

The PTA would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to those families that have already contributed $100 and to those that have been making regular payments on their pledged amounts.

6th Grade Families…
Please send in your payment for the April Yosemite trip. The full amount of $250 must be turned in by February 26. Checks may be made out to Roosevelt PTA. You may also pay via credit card in the school office or with the Donate button on the parent blog.

5th Grade Families…
Please send in your payments now for the week Outdoor Education in May. As with other field trips and events throughout the year, the PTA can’t fund the entire trip for the 5th grade so we need parent contributions  to make this trip happen.

Help Needed…
Principal Girardi is still looking for anyone that is interested in volunteering for any of the following:
1) a parent who likes to scrapbook to create an album with scrapbook pages for articles about Roosevelt and our accomplishments.
2) a parent to decorate the office for the holidays (Valentine’s Day, Easter/Spring, etc.)
3) parents willing to help with drop off on Vera, Euclid and/or the upper parking lot
Please contact the school office at 369-5597 if you can help out with any of these jobs.

Snack Shack…
Don’t forget, the Snack Shack is open every afternoon starting at 2:00pm and closing at approximately 2:45 (or 1:00pm – 1:45pm on Thursdays). The snacks being sold all fall within the dietary guidelines that have to be followed, but still appeal to the students. All items are priced at either $1 or $2. If you want to let your child buy something at the snack shack, but don’t want to send them to school with cash that they might use at the ice cream truck, you may purchase Raccoon Bucks for $1 each in the office. Raccoon Bucks may be exchanged for snack items in the snack shack. Note: 5th grade students are operating the snack shack – selling, making change, totaling each day’s sales, maintaining profit & loss statements, writing deposit slips, etc. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for our 5th graders, so your support of the snack shack is also supporting their learning!

A Night in Paris…
The Princess Ball is coming!!! This will be a daughter/VIP dance to be held on March 8 at 6:30pm. Who or what constitutes a VIP? Girls may invite fathers, older brothers, uncles, mothers, aunts, cousins, etc. Girls may invite anyone that she considers a VIP. Ticket sales have already begun so fill out your ticket forms and return them to the school office or your child’s classroom by March 3, 2014. Cost is $5 per person and includes desserts, photo and a night of dancing to tunes by DJ Pyramidz. Volunteers are still needed, so if you missed the planning meeting on February 1, please contact Nicole Lynch at lynch5600@aol.com  (1st grade parents are being asked to assist with this event).

BoxTops Promotion…

Donation letters…
The PTA has donation letters that you can use to ask for donations for a general PTA contribution, the 5th grade trip to Outdoor Education or the 6th grade trip to Yosemite. If you would like a hard copy of any of the letters, please let us know and we’ll be happy to give you as many copies as you need. You can also download the letters here and print them out yourself: PTA_Donation, PTA_OE_Donation, PTA_Yosemite_Donation.

Online Directory…
The 2013/2014 school directory is going green! We’ve switched to an online directory to save money on printing costs and to save paper. You will be able to access the directory from your home computer, smart phone or tablet starting in December. You can also update your family information any time during the year. The system will “graduate” your child every year, so you only have to enter the information just once. Each year you just need to verify that your information is correct.

Go to:  https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/new-family.a5w?fam=RooseveltSchool13838

Fundraise While You Shop…
Don’t forget to scan this week’s receipts for Shoparoo, check those Safeway receipts to make sure that Roosevelt is getting your escrip credits and look for Box Tops on anything you bought this week! (A note about Shoparoo: there are other Roosevelt schools in the area – one in Burlingame and one in San Leandro. Please make sure that your points are going to the correct Roosevelt School.)

YMCA Fundraising…
The YMCA has begun their annual campaign for funds for after school programs, swim lessons, camps and family membership fees. They will be having a restaurant fundraiser at Marvin Gardens in Belmont at 1160 Old County Road on Saturday, February 22. Marvin Gardens will donate 15% of their sales back to the YMCA. For those of you that haven’t been to Marvin Gardens, it’s a great family friendly pub and grill in Belmont. As a bonus, kids really enjoy watching the trains go by on the track right next to the outdoor patio!

Type to Learn…
One of the challenges of the switch to Common Core is the technology piece and the amount of writing/typing that the students will have to do on the new assessment tests. It is imperative that Roosevelt students learn how to type on the computer keyboard. At school, the students are using a program called Type to Learn 4. This program is available for download so that students may practice and receive credit at home. Parents need to download the full version of this free program. Go to http://ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads/ and select the download for Mac or Windows. (This download can take up to 30 minutes, so please be patient) Students will log in with the same username and password that they use at school. The access code is 145196.
