In case you missed the San Mateo Daily Journal on Friday, some of Roosevelt’s 6th graders were featured on the front page for their work with Street Life Ministries. You can see the full article at http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?id=1761731&title=Making+a+change%2C+one+sandwich+at+a+time#.UPuE0aMdbEh.email

The 6th graders need more sandwich bags, paper plates, paper towels and plastic knives, and also some antibacterial kitchen wipes. Any donations can be dropped off in the school office.

1st Grade News…
First grade teacher, Rebecca Valdez, will be on medical leave through the end of the school year. Ms. Girardi and the 1st grade team has been interviewing teachers and are happy to announce that  a new teacher has been hired for the remainder of the school year.  The new teacher will start as soon as the district has processed all of the needed paperwork. Ms. Girardi is anticipating that the new teacher will be in place the week of January 28.

Substitute Principal…
There will be a substitute principal (Diane Kizler) on the Roosevelt campus on 1/23, 1/25, 1/29, and 1/31. Ms. Girardi has some required work/meetings to attend to on those days that can’t be interrupted. Ms. Kizler will be handling the day to day operations on our campus.

Roosevelt Snack Shack…
The snack shack has now been up and running for a few weeks and the 5th graders are really learning a lot! They’ve been tracking their profits and expenses and learning how to make change, track inventory, and fill out deposit slips.

They have made a rule that students cannot buy more than $5.00 worth of snacks per day. The 5th graders want to make sure that parents don’t get upset with the amount of money being spent in the snack shack. So please don’t send your child to school with $20 bills.

The 5th grade parents are supervising the 5th grade students in the snack shack for the first 30 minutes each afternoon until Mr. Williams or Ms. Novikoff can take over after their classes are dismissed. If you are not a 5th grade parent, but you would like to help out and take on a 30 minute shift on a day that works with your schedule, please contact Mr. Williams at jwilliams@rcsdk8.net  All profits made from the snack shack help to fund the 5th graders trip to Outdoor Education in May.

Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is a. January 15, 1929. Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. MLKIt celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the United States.

Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the “I Have A Dream” speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.

In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King died, a campaign was started for his birthday to become a holiday to honor him. After the first bill was introduced, trade unions lead the campaign for the federal holiday. It was endorsed in 1976. Following support from the musician Stevie Wonder with his single “Happy Birthday” and a petition with six million signatures, the bill became law in 1983. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, although it was not observed in all states until the year 2000.

Have a great week!
