Trivia Question…
There used to be a 2 cent coin produced by the US Mint.

a. True
b. False

Make your guess and find out if you’re right at the bottom!

Candy sale update…
There are still some families that haven’t yet turned in money owed for the World’s Finest Chocolate Sales. Our PTA had to pay World’s Finest for all of the boxes that were taken out, so please send your money in so that the PTA may be reimbursed and that money can then be used for programs for the students.

Coin for a Day Challenge…
Roosevelt is participating in a coin drive challenge to raise money for books for our library as well as each classroom library. Please bring in your coins this week and lets see how much we can raise for books! (Pennies on Monday, Nickels on Tuesday, Dimes on Wednesday, Quarters on Thursday and any coin on Friday) The class that raises the most money will win a pizza party!

Box Tops Contest…
It’s time for the first Box Tops Contest of the year and this one is by classroom! The class that brings in the most Box Tops will win an ice cream party!  Box Tops may be turned in to your child’s classrom. Look for Box Tops on products such as Kleenex, Cheerios, Hefty, Ziploc, Huggies, etc. Every box top the school collects gives 10 cents back to our school! So tell your family and friends to start collecting those box tops. (Once this contest ends, don’t stop collecting – there will be another contest in the spring!)

Help Needed…
Ms. Girardi needs help with getting the word out about our Kindergarten Tour Night on Wednesday so we need people to help distribute the flyers at various preschools and businesses around town. If you can help, please stop by the school office to pick up some flyers to drop off at the libraries, local businesses such as Bayshore Elite and Creative Learning Loft in Roosevelt Plaza as well as any preschool that you may have attended with your child. There will be a list of locations that will need flyers to be dropped off and you can sign up to drop off flyers at as many places as you’d like. Thank you for your help.

Looking for a Tree Stump Grinder…
The school’s garden committee is looking for anyone that has access to a root grinder or chainsaws or anything that can help to take out the giant tree stump that’s in our school garden. Right now it makes using the storage shed in the garden almost impossible, and so any help or leads would be appreciated. Please contact Megan Goulden at megan.goulden@gmail.com

Parent/Teacher Conferences…
Teachers have been sending home schedules for Parent/Teacher conferences. Please make sure that you’ve signed up for a time and if you haven’t, please contact your child’s teacher.

On the Parent Blog…
Pictures from the Halloween Parade have been posted as well as pictures from Ms. Mallari’s class and Mrs. Torres’ class.  The 5th graders in Room 13 have been campaigning for class officers and you can see some pictures as well as link to Mr. Williams’ blog to see the campaign speeches. The 4th graders in Room 10 have been learning how to play their recorders and more pictures have been added of the 1st graders working on their American Symbols PBL unit. Kinder and middle school tour season is starting early, so more pictures of what’s happening in our classrooms are desperately needed. If you have any that you’d like to send in, let us know. And don’t forget, for the most accurate information throughout the week, check out the parent blog. www.rooseveltparents.com

Kinder Tour Night…
If you know anyone that has a child that will be entering Kindergarten next year, let them know that Roosevelt will be holding a Kindergarten Tour Night on November 7 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. For more information, go to the School Tours section of the parent blog or call the school office at 369-5597.

Hometown Holidays Parade…
Roosevelt will once again be walking in Redwood City’s Hometown Holidays Parade on December 1. This year the theme will be Christmas in Hawaii and volunteers are needed. Both Kindergarten and 2nd grade have been assigned to help with this event, but families from other grade levels are also welcome to help and participate in the parade. Parents and children are needed to volunteer for ideas, decorating, walking in the parade and anyone that would like to perform a short hula dance for the short 3 minute stop during the parade. If you wish to volunteer, please contact Brandi Sevudredre at blkchrry@hotmail.com

Holiday Gift Store…
The holidays are just around the corner and this year we’re trying something new – a Holiday Gift Store! This will be run much like the book fair. An outside company will be coming in with items that will be set up in the Holiday Store. Students (and parents) will be able to shop for gifts for family members and friends for the holidays. More information will be coming home in the coming weeks. 6th grade families have been assigned to help with this event, so look for sign up sheets soon.

Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is a. True. The United States two cent coin was produced from 1864 to 1873. It was made of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc and is a little bit smaller than the quarter we know today. No one knows for sure why a two cent piece was introduced, but it is possible that it was an effort to return some coins to circulation.

Around the time the two cent piece was introduced, the Civil War was in its third year and people began to worry about what was going to happen. It had been believed that it would be a very short war.

Worried about the economic future of the United States, they started stashing away coins for the hard times they feared were coming. First they began hoarding gold and silver coins, but eventually all coins disappeared from circulation. So, when the two cent piece was first released to the public, it appeared that it would be accepted. People were using it regularly for their day to day purchases. Later, however, it was determined that the only reason people accepted the coin was because of the shortage of circulating coins caused by the Civil War.

When the war ended and people began using their silver coins once again, the two cent piece fell out of favor. So, the two cent coin became one of the shortest lived issues of United States Coinage.

So, if you come across one when looking under your couch cushions or at the bottom of your purse for coins this week for the Coin for a Day Challenge, you’re in luck! A 2 cent piece from 1872 is worth about $1,400 today.

Have a great week!
