Ms. Vawter’s 4th grade class in Room 10 and Ms. Coyle’s 6th grade class in Room 17 have started using iPod touches for word fluency as part of a program called Project iRead. Ms. Vawter and 6th grade teacher Sarah Coyle were chosen by Patricia McCrae (only 4 teachers in the entire district were selected) to pilot this program, geared to helping with fluency.

The students read a passage in their book out loud using the voice recorder on their iPods to record their speech. Then they pause and listen to their recording while reading along listening to their own voice. This lets them hear how they are saying the words and which areas they need to correct. Other schools using this method have seen remarkable gains in word fluency.
