School and PTA Resources for all Roosevelt Parents

1/13 – This Week at Roosevelt

Message from the Principal

I hope your children had a good start to the new year this past week. Unfortunately, I was in trainings and meetings most of the week, so I didn’t get into every classroom to wish them a happy new year, but I hope to do so this coming week. I also hope to see many of you this Thursday evening at our Family Vision night.

This Thursday from 6-7:30pm in the cafeteria, we are coming together as a community to examine our vision for Roosevelt for the next decade. We want to hear what you envision for Roosevelt in the years to come. The evening will be a dual-language event in both English and Spanish and will involve a variety of fun activities and open discussions for parents and students about who we are and who we will become. The evening is from 6-7:30pm, and dinner will be provided. A flyer is going home tomorrow (Monday), and I do ask that you RSVP to the office, so I know how much food to provide. As you plan your week, I hope you consider coming on Thursday.

Starting tomorrow, we have an additional administrator working at Roosevelt on Mondays and Tuesdays. Assistant Principal David Camarena is atRoosevelt on Wednesdays, Fridays, and every other Thursday, as we share him with Kennedy, so we are thrilled to have an another administrator on the other days. Please welcome Derek Grasty who will be with us two days a week and at Taft Elementary School on two other days. Derek joins us with a wealth of experience, working as a principal in San José, Hayward, and Palo Alto. Most recently, he has been a mentor for administrators through the Santa Cruz County of Education. We are very excited for him to join our team, and I know you will help make him feel very welcome.

Our parent tours start back up again this week on Thursday and then continue on January 24, and 27 with more dates to be added to February. We will need lots of parents to help out as tour guides, so please let us know if you are interested. Even if you can just help on one particular day, that would be very much appreciated. All tours will be in the morning from 8:30-9:45am. Please consider signing up using this link.

We also have Meet RCSD nights this week on January 13 at Kennedy and January 14 at Hoover from 5:30-7:30pm. This will be our first opportunity for incoming families to talk to all of the different schools about their programs, and of course we will be there representing Roosevelt and our wonderful PBL program. We would like a couple of current parents to join us. I realize this is late notice, but please let me know if you are interested in talking to prospective RCSD families on one or both evenings.

A reminder that we have a long weekend coming up next weekend as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20. We are partnering with the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition for a Day of Service at Roosevelt. We will be repainting the rainbow stairs and painting new boards for the letters and numbers in the upper quad. We would love you to join us for some/all of the morning’s festivities from 8:30am-noon.

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

– Principal Tina Mercer
