Message from the Principal

Redwood City School District has been in the news this week with the Board of Trustees voting on the Phase 1 of the proposed school mergers and consolidations. This was a very difficult decision for Dr. John Baker and the board. The board voted to approve the following:

  • Move Orion to John Gill campus to share with the Mandarin Immersion program.
  • Merge the two Spanish Immersion programs at Adelante and Selby Lane to the Selby Lane campus and create Spanish Immersion Pre-K and TK classes. The English strand and the middle school will vacate the Selby Lane campus.
  • Consolidate the Bayside schools by merging the two smallest schools, Fair Oaks and Taft, on the Taft campus.
  • Close Hawes school and expand Roosevelt’s and Henry Ford’s attendance zones to include all or parts of the Hawes attendance zone.
  • Close the district office and rent out the space.
  • Seek outside funding for summer school.
  • Provide all displaced students from schools merging or being consolidated with priority in the Schools of Choice lottery.

What does this mean for Roosevelt? While we will not be experiencing a program change, we will be impacted by schools near us. We can expect to receive more students from both John Gill and Hawes next year, and possibly Selby Lane and Fair Oaks. It is our role to make them feel welcome.

On that note, we have a couple of outreach opportunities to help displaced families. On Wednesday evening, December 5, Selby Lane will be hosting a meet and greet for families to meet with other RCSD schools. On Wednesday, December 12, we will be hosting Hawes families at Roosevelt from 9:30-11am. We will have the opportunity to tour them through Roosevelt. I would love some parents to help with one or both of these events, especially those of you who speak Spanish. Please let me know if you are available.
