Type to Learn…
One of the challenges of the switch to Common Core is the technology piece and the amount of writing/typing that the students will have to do on the new assessment tests. It is imperative that Roosevelt students learn how to type on the computer keyboard. At school, the students are using a program called Type to Learn 4. This program is available for download so that students may practice and receive credit at home. Parents need to download the full version of this free program. Go to http://ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads/ and select the download for Mac or Windows. (This download can take up to 30 minutes, so please be patient) Students will log in with the same username and password that they use at school. The access code is 145196.

6th Grade Families…
Please send in your payment for the April Yosemite trip. To reserve a spot for your child, $100 is due by January 13, $200 by January 31 and the full amount of $250 must be turned in by February 26. Checks may be made out to Roosevelt PTA. You may also pay via credit card in the school office or with the Donate button on the parent blog.

5th Grade Families…
Please send in your payments now for the week Outdoor Education in May. As with other field trips and events throughout the year, the PTA can’t fund the entire trip for the 5th grade so we need parent contributions  to make this trip happen.

After School Dance with Danny G…
There are just a few spaces available for Danny G’s after school dance program for students in grades 1 – 6.  This session is 10 weeks, beginning Feb 3. Cost is $45 per child and payment must be received in the school office before the start of class. Checks should be made out to Roosevelt PTA.

Help Needed…
Principal Girardi is looking for anyone that is interested in volunteering for any of the following:1) a parent who likes to scrapbook to create an album with scrapbook pages for articles about Roosevelt and our accomplishments.
2) a parent to decorate the office for the holidays (Valentine’s Day, Easter/Spring, etc.)
3) parents willing to help with drop off on Vera, Euclid and/or the upper parking lot
Please contact the school office at 369-5597 if you can help out with any of these jobs.

Movie Afternoon Update…
The Student Council’s movie afternoon was a huge success! However, there were almost 100 students that apparently did not turn in slips stating that they planned on attending the movie. Student council needed those slips returned to get an approximate headcount to purchase enough water and popcorn on the Wednesday afternoon before the movie. As such, they ran out of popcorn and a parent had to drive to Smart & Final to purchase more because they hadn’t purchased enough the day before. In the future, please be sure to send in any forms that come home so that this situation can be avoided.

Middle School Dance…
Roosevelt’s Student Council is proud to present the first ever Middle School Valentine’s Day Dance on Friday, February 7th at 6:00pm in the M.U.R. There will be music by DJ Pyramidz, games and snacks for purchase! Dress to impress! Pre-sale tickets will be sold at lunch starting Monday, February 3. Tickets cost $5 each (pre-sale) or $8 at the door. Parent support is needed! Please fill out the volunteer form if you can help with set-up, chaperoning, clean-up or donating snacks.

Snack Shack is Back!…
Roosevelt’s Site Council has been working with the district’s wellness coordinator and we have been given the go ahead to re-open our school’s snack shack. Every year, the PTA hears complaints about the ice cream truck selling to the Roosevelt students every afternoon outside the school gate. Unfortunately, because the curb and sidewalk are public property, the ice cream truck has the right to sell at that location BUT, to combat this problem, the PTA and 5th grade students will once again be opening Roosevelt’s Snack Shack after school. The 5th graders will be running the store under the supervision of Mr. Williams, Ms. Novikoff and Ms. Li. The students will be responsible for selling the snacks, inventory and balance sheets, reordering items, etc. The snacks being sold all fall within the dietary guidelines that have to be followed, but still appeal to the students. All items are priced at either $1 or $2. Parents may also purchase Raccoon Bucks in the office that the students can exchange for snack items in the snack shack so that you know that if you’re giving your child some money to spend at the snack shack, that they can’t spend it at the ice cream truck. The snack shack will be open every afternoon for an hour after school in the PTA room which is located next to the YMCA room. All profits made from the snack shack will go towards the 5th grader’s Outdoor Education week.

A Night in Paris…
The Princess Ball is coming!!! This will be a daughter/VIP dance to be held on March 8. Ticket sales have already begun so fill out your ticket forms and return them to the school office or your child’s classroom by March 3, 2014. Cost is $5 per person and includes desserts, photo and DJ. Volunteers are still needed, so if you missed the planning meeting on February 1, please contact Nicole Lynch at lynch5600@aol.com  (1st grade parents are being asked to assist with this event).

Donation letters…
The PTA has donation letters that you can use to ask for donations for a general PTA contribution, the 5th grade trip to Outdoor Education or the 6th grade trip to Yosemite. If you would like a hard copy of any of the letters, please let us know and we’ll be happy to give you as many copies as you need. You can also download the letters here and print them out yourself: PTA_Donation, PTA_OE_Donation, PTA_Yosemite_Donation.

Online Directory…
The 2013/2014 school directory is going green! We’ve switched to an online directory to save money on printing costs and to save paper. You will be able to access the directory from your home computer, smart phone or tablet starting in December. You can also update your family information any time during the year. The system will “graduate” your child every year, so you only have to enter the information just once. Each year you just need to verify that your information is correct.

Don’t forget to scan this week’s receipts for Shoparoo, check those Safeway receipts to make sure that Roosevelt is getting your escrip credits and look for Box Tops on anything you bought this week! (A note about Shoparoo: there are other Roosevelt schools in the area – one in Burlingame and one in San Leandro. Please make sure that your points are going to the correct Roosevelt School.)
