Safe Routes to School Meeting…
You are invited to attend the City of Redwood City’s Safe Routes to School Recommendations Report Review at Roosevelt School on Monday, June 10th at 5:30pm.

This meeting is an important opportunity to share your thoughts on the draft recommended improvements. The goal of the recommendations is to help improve walking and biking access to schools for students and their families.  The improvements were developed based on parent and community input gathered during school walk and bike audits in May. Please join us to review:

•    Suggested Walking and Biking Routes to School Maps
•    Proposed engineering improvements
•    Discuss activities to get more kids walking and biking

We hope that you will join us and explore how to make walking and bicycling safer, easier, and more accessible for students and families. Spanish translation will be available and, if needed, free childcare by the YMCA. Food will also be provided.

Yearbooks…
The school yearbook is now available for purchase! Mr. Williams’ after school yearbook club has been working on them for most of the year and they look fantastic! If you get a chance, stop by Mrs. Boone’s class and wish her well on her retirement! Thanks Mrs. Boone for all of your years at Roosevelt! Happy Retirement!

Correction & Updates

mistakeCorrection…
The art show set up was listed for Thursday, June 6, but Marlene Perez will begin putting it up starting at 9:00am on June 5.  Marlene will be there from 9-6, so any time people have (even if its only an hour or two) would be appreciated.  Volunteers are welcome and needed on the 6th too.  Marlene’s goal is to have the bulk of it up on the 5th so that the 6th can be for finishing touches so as many hands as we can get the better.  We NEED volunteers to help install!!!  No artistic talent needed! Just an ability to use a stapler. Contact marlenevperez@comcast.net for more information or just come to the YMCA room on Wednesday & Thursday.

Class Field Trips, Picnics, Etc…

Make sure to check with your child’s teacher about anything coming up in your child’s class. Please note: the school/district DOES NOT pay for field trips, or class parties. Field trips are paid for by parent donations and each class is given $20 per student for the entire year by the PTA. That $20 may cover the entire cost of transportation and entry fees, or it may not. If you are being asked to donate money for a field trip, it is because more money is needed to cover costs. As for classroom parties, teachers DO NOT receive any money from the school/district or PTA. If your teacher has requested donations of money, it is to cover the cost of the party.

Earthquakes Soccer Game…

Get your order forms in for the SJ Earthquakes v LA Galaxy soccer game at Stanford Stadium on June 29. Roosevelt has once again reserved a block of seats for the game. Flyers went home in last Thursday’s blue folder with information about the game, the AMAZING ticket sale prizes and the order form! All tickets cost $20 each. Tell your friends and family – this game was sold out last year and we were lucky enough to have an entire section! Order forms can be sent in to your child’s classroom (but make sure to put your child’s name & room number on the form) or you can bring your order form into the office. All orders are due by June 7 so that we have enough time to distribute the tickets before the end of school.

Calendar Updates…
A few events have been added so make sure to mark them on your calendar. (Field trips are only posted if I receive information from teachers or Principal Girardi. If you don’t see a field trip listed, it is because I didn’t receive the information. If you let me know of any activities in your child’s class that you think should go on the update, let me know and I’ll be happy to add them.)

Help will also be needed on June 7th to take all of the artwork down. If you can only help for an hour or two, it will be appreciated! On the Parent Blog…
Many thanks to Joanne Dunbar for pictures from Friday night’s Talent show!

Gardening Volunteers…
Are there any green thumbs out there? Or do you just like to pull weeds? One of our parents, Megan Goulden, would love some help with the planting areas around our campus. Most of these projects can be worked on by the whole family, or groups of friends and most of the projects won’t take very long. You can work in the gardens on any day or time that works with your schedule. Even an hour on the weekend would be a big help! We want to make sure that the landscaping that was put in for Beautification Weekend stays healthy and continues to grow. Contact Megan at megan.goulden@gmail.com or contact the school office.

PTA Enrichment Fund…
Each family that contributes $100 in either a direct donation or fulfills their pledged donation of at least $100 will receive free Raccoon Bucks which the students can use at the Snack Shack!

Checks should be made out to Roosevelt PTA or you can make a cash donation.  You can also pay via Credit Card or bank transfer using the PayPal Donate button on the parent blog at www.rooseveltparents.com You can also pay by credit card in the school office. Thank you for your generosity!

Volunteer from Home…
Do you want to help out, but just can’t be on campus to do it? Our PTA is looking for anyone to volunteer as a grant writer to help secure additional fundraising money for our school. You don’t need any special training and you will be given all of the information you need to apply for grants. This is a job that can be done on your own time from home. Please contact Ms. Girardi at pgirardi@rcsdk8.net if you are interested or want more information.

Looking forward…
We need to know what YOU want to see at Roosevelt next year. Last year it was a parent that came to the PTA with the proposal of using Art4All instead of Art in Action. The PTA agreed that it was a great program and so it was made it a budget priority. If you have ideas to share, you can email your ideas and suggestions to trishreillytaylor@gmail.com (English) or Lydia Hernandez at lyhernan2002@gmail.com (Spanish)

Fundraise While You Shop…
Do you have a smartphone? Take a picture of your weekly shopping receipts for Shoparoo points! If you have an iPhone or Android smartphone, download the free Shoparoo app today. Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is d. 35,000. The Musée du Louvre in English, the Louvre Museum or simply The Louvre— has a collection of over 1 million works of art, of which about 35 000 are on display, spread out over three wings of the former palace. The Louvre—is one of the world’s largest museums, and a historic monument. monalisa A central landmark of Paris, France, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement (district). Nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st  century are exhibited over an area of 60,600 square metres (652,300 square feet). With more than 8 million visitors each year, the Louvre is the world’s most visited museum.

Some of the most famous works of art in the museum are the Venus of Milo, the Nike of Samothrake, the Dying Slave by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Our Art Show on Thursday, won’t come close to the sheer size of The Louvre, but I do think everyone will be seeing a lot of talent displayed! At least one art piece per Roosevelt student will be on display on Thursday, so that’s over 550 pieces of art!

And while The Louvre is able to pay a staff of about 2,000 employees  to work on the art displays, we only have a few wonderful volunteers signed up so far to help out! So be sure to contact Marlene Perez at marlenevperez@comcast.net to help out on Thursday, June 6 with displaying the students’ artwork.

Roosevelt’s Talent Show 2013!

Screen shot 2013-06-02 at 12.26.43 PMThe cafeteria was full of talent on Friday, May 31 as Roosevelt had the very first Talent Show! There was singing, gymnastics, mimes, dancing, hula-hooping, soccer tricks and more!

Everyone did such a wonderful job and made it a special night for all.

Many thanks to Emily Kaltenbach and Whitney Eakin for coordinating this event and to Jennifer Torres, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Coyle, Nancy Stevenson Smith, Tracy Da Costa, Lorena Mello, Trish Taylor, volunteer parents and the many, many students that worked behind the scenes to make the evening a success.

A big thank you as well to Joanne Dunbar for taking pictures!
