The 5th grade parents are supervising the 5th grade students in the snack shack for the first 30 minutes each afternoon until Mr. Williams or Ms. Novikoff can take over after their classes are dismissed. If you are not a 5th grade parent, but you would like to help out and take on a 30 minute shift on a day that works with your schedule, please contact Mr. Williams at jwilliams@rcsdk8.net  All profits made from the snack shack help to fund the 5th graders trip to Outdoor Education in May.

Trivia Question Answer…
Outdoor Ed 1The correct answer is c. 44 years. (But if you answered b. 47 years, you are partially correct)

The beginning of Outdoor Education for San Mateo County Schools dates to the summer of 1965 when Gus Xerogeanes, a natural sciences teacher for the San Bruno Park School District, took a group of 6th grade students on a weeklong summer school adventure to the YMCA Camp at Jones Gulch.

A district-wide program for San Bruno Park Schools was started in the spring of 1966 with only 60 students each week due to limited space at the site. In the fall of 1966, more districts began participating in the program, which continued to be run by the San Bruno Park School District. A pilot Outdoor Education program was approved in 1968 and began with 650 pupils. For more information about the Outdoor Education program, go to www.smcoe.k12.ca.us/outdoored/smoe/001/About.html

Outdoor Ed 2It costs approximately $250 per student to attend a week of Outdoor Education. Roosevelt’s 5th graders are scheduled to go the week of May 6 – 10 this year and they have to raise about $15,000 for all of them to go. Please help keep this tradition alive for our 5th grade class by supporting our school’s snack shack! The snack shack (The Roosevelt Canteen) is open for an hour every day after school and is located in the PTA room at the bottom of the main hallway. Snack items are priced at $.50 to $2.00.

Have a great week!
