Volunteers Needed…
Next week is Roosevelt’s Beautification Weekend! Wonderful community sponsors including Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC) and 2nd Mile have planned some wonderful changes for our campus, but they can only happen with the help of our families. We will need at least 200 volunteers on the weekend of October 6 and October 7 to make everything happen. There will be something for every skill level and ability and children are encouraged to help on that day as well. You can sign up to help on either day and for either the 9:00-12:00 slot or the 1:00-5:00 slot. (Please note that the flyer that went home mistakenly listed the first time slot as 8:00-12:00) All students that volunteer will be given a special t-shirt that may be worn as a uniform shirt for the rest of the school year. All volunteers will also receive a t-shirt from 2nd Mile. Please turn in the yellow or green flyer that came home in last Thursday’s folder to let the organizers know if you will be volunteering and what size shirt your child wears. Childcare will be available during the event.

On the Parent Blog…
Stanford University is now requiring students to take Critical Thinking courses. A key component to PBL is critical thinking. Check out the article from The Almanac on our parent blog. I’ve posted some pictures from our 7th grade classes and the September newsletter from Ms. Krooss’ 4th grade class.  If you have anything you would like to see posted on the parent blog, please let us know! rooseveltblog@gmail.com

Spirit Wear and Bumper Stickers…
Both are available for purchase in the office year round. We just got some more navy zippered hoodies in, so get them while supplies last.

T-shirts – $8.00 each (pink, light blue, grey and navy)
Hoodie – $18.00 each (grey)
Zip front hoodie – $25.00 each (navy)
Hats – $10.00 each (khaki)
Bumper Sticker – $1.00 each

If you’re stopping by the office in the morning, please be patient with Gwen, Haley and Lorena. There is always a lot going on in the mornings, so it may take a while for them to get the chance to retrieve the items for you from the storage room. Also, if you are paying cash, please have exact change – the office is not allowed to hold cash to make change.

Volunteer Timesheets…
Parents filled out a volunteer commitment form at the beginning of the year. Parents are asked to contribute 40 volunteer hours per year to support student achievement. Volunteer timesheets are available in each classroom as well as the school office. A parent has volunteered to track each family’s hours for the year. You can earn hours by attending school meetings, chaperoning on field trips, volunteering in the classroom, doing work at home for your child’s teacher or helping out with campus events such as the upcoming Beautification Day. If you volunteer regularly, you may fill out one timesheet each month instead of one each time.

Student Safety…
Please remember to use the white drop off zone on Vera Avenue for morning drop off and pick up. If you are driving on Upton, please turn on Madison and then make a left on Windsor Way and then make a left on Vera Avenue to access the drop off zone. Please do not drive up Vera Avenue or drop off your child in front of the staff parking area. Also remember to be courteous of the school’s neighbors and not block driveways or walk on grass or plantings. It is especially important to slow down in front of the school since the temporary speed bumps have been removed. They will be replaced by permanent speed bumps in the coming weeks.

For student safety, the school gates are closed during school hours and during the YMCA after school program. The school’s lower playground gates are locked at 8:30am and reopened at 1:00pm (12:30pm on Thursdays). The gates are then locked at 2:35pm and unlocked by YMCA at 5:00pm. The upper campus gates are locked at 9:30am and unlocked at 12:00pm to allow for Kinder early bird dismissal.

Roosevelt’s Facebook Page…
The district created a Facebook page for every school in the district. Please be sure to “Like” the Roosevelt page to get school and district updates in your news feed. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Roosevelt-Elementary-School/214259038634327

Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is b. Kinder = 840 hours, Grades 1-3 = 1,034 hours, Grades 4-7 = 1,096 hours. That number doesn’t even include any time the students spend on campus after school at the YMCA after school program or participating in clubs. Since our kids spend so much time on the Roosevelt campus, it should look and feel as good as possible for them. So come to next weekend’s Beautification Weekend! So come and weed, sweep, clean windows, paint, build or just help serve food to other volunteers. Even if you can only spend an hour or two helping out, it can make a big difference!

Have a great week!
