Some of you may have heard about the 2 alarm fire that destroyed a home on Vera Avenue on Monday, May 14. (ABC News Story) The family that lost their home is the Kandil family. Maryam and Salma Kandil are twin girls attending Kindergarten at Roosevelt. The girls live with their mother and have two older brothers – one at Kennedy and one at Woodside. Luckily, no one was home at the time of the fire, so no one was hurt. The family lost everything they owned.

They are currently staying at a hotel, but they can only stay for one more day.

They are in need of everything, but right now they need food and clothing. The twin girls wear a size 8 in clothes, but we don’t know what sizes their mom and brothers wear so gift cards would be very useful. The San Mateo Fire Department very generously gave the family some gift cards, but they won’t last very long.

One of our Kindergarten teachers, Jennifer Torres, has offered to be the person in charge of collecting donations and she will get them to the Kandil family. Any clothing or food items as well as gift cards or money can be dropped off at Roosevelt’s school office at 2223 Vera Avenue.

If you have any questions, you may contact the school office at 369-5597 or email Jennifer Torres at jtorres@rcsdk8.net
