It’s time for the annual day of games and for everything to happen, volunteers are needed for the different activities. June 13 School Board Meeting…
This is it! The decision will be made at the June 13th school board meeting to determine whether Roosevelt will become a K-8 school or not.  This has been a very long journey and for those keeping track, it started back in 2007 with the Roosevelt Revitalization Committee. We all realize that this vote comes after school is out for the summer, but this is an extremely important meeting and your presence is appreciated. If you think Roosevelt should become a K-8, we need you to come and show your support! Because the board is expecting a lot of people to attend, it will be held at McKinley Auditorium (400 Duane Street) at 7:00pm.

Roosevelt Facebook Page…
The district has created Facebook pages for each school in the district. The district wants to use these pages to get important school and district information out to families. Memorial Day Holiday…
Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day — no school

A Message From the Parcel Tax Committee…
As you know, the Redwood City School District is once again trying for a ballot measure in order to get local funding for our cash strapped schools. If Yes on W passes, it will bring in about $1.7 million per year for 5 years to our schools. This would be the biggest bang for your buck or hour of your time that you could do for schools this year! I know you are busy but we NEED you now.

The Yes on W campaign is going very well, but we need to get our message out to more voters before June 5th. This next week is critical to getting the word out since many of our local voters cast their ballots early.

We need everyone to come out and phone bank and/or precinct walk. Below find the sign up link to volunteer. (I want to add that Spanish speakers are needed! They have a list of Spanish speaking homes that need to be called!)

http://www.betterrwcschools.org/Better-RWC-Schools/GetInvolved-BetterSchools.html

If one of these nights/days does not work for you, let me know and I will get you a phone list and/or walking areas.

Just like the last two efforts, we need more volunteers and we need them now if we are to win. This will be a very close election and could come down to ONE vote only. So even if you only contact and find that one more YES vote, this could be the difference between winning and losing.

So, please come out for an hour or more! in the next couple of weeks. We especially need people this week and next to contact those early voters.

I will be phone banking tonight and I’d love to see you. We either phone bank at San Mateo Credit Union or Fair Oaks Community Center – so check on website for address and location.

BTW – for those that have not phone banked before, I know it sounds scary or yucky…but there is an easy script to follow and you are not having to talk no voters into voting yes, we are just getting our message out and finding those yes votes. We need 2 yes votes for every 1 no vote so it is looking for the jewels in the sand every night. Most people are very pleasant that we talk to and I leave the phone banking sessions feeling energized and good about our community. So please come out.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We can do this together. Our students deserve the best education we can provide them.

Roosevelt Family Needs Help!

UPDATE!
Roosevelt’s Outreach Specialist has sent us the following update:
The family was in a hotel but they were supposed to move into a house on May 26th. They received enough clothing donations for the twin girls, but need money or gift certificates to purchase clothing for the mother and brothers as well as household items and food.

For cash donations, please donate to Wells Fargo Bank donation account #3141234918 (under the grandfather’s name: Jose Linares)
or
The family is still in great need of gift cards to Target, Safeway, Old Navy. They can be dropped off in the Roosevelt Office M-F 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.–please label for Kandil Family.

Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of support and generosity!

— ———————————————–

Some of you may have heard about the 2 alarm fire that destroyed a home on Vera Avenue on Monday, May 14. (ABC News Story) The family that lost their home is the Kandil family. Maryam and Salma Kandil are twin girls attending Kindergarten at Roosevelt. The girls live with their mother and have two older brothers – one at Kennedy and one at Woodside. Luckily, no one was home at the time of the fire, so no one was hurt. The family lost everything they owned.

They are currently staying at a hotel, but they can only stay for one more day.

They are in need of everything, but right now they need food and clothing. The twin girls wear a size 8 in clothes, but we don’t know what sizes their mom and brothers wear so gift cards would be very useful. The San Mateo Fire Department very generously gave the family some gift cards, but they won’t last very long.

One of our Kindergarten teachers, Jennifer Torres, has offered to be the person in charge of collecting donations and she will get them to the Kandil family. Any clothing or food items as well as gift cards or money can be dropped off at Roosevelt’s school office at 2223 Vera Avenue.

If you have any questions, you may contact the school office at 369-5597 or email Jennifer Torres at jtorres@rcsdk8.net

SJ Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy!

GAME ON!

Roosevelt Elementary and the San Jose Earthquakes have paired up to get you an outstanding deal on one of THE biggest rivalries of the year.

SJ Earthquakes vs. LA Galaxy

The California Clasico at Stanford Stadium is THE California professional soccer showdown of the year. Bring your family and friends and join other Roosevelt families at what is expected to be a sellout crowd at Stanford Stadium on June 30th at 7:00pm. Enjoy a nice summer night of professional Soccer with a fireworks show to follow the game.

Want to get a player’s eye view? ALL ROOSEVELT STUDENTS that sell tickets and attend the game will be able to participate in the “Parade of Champions” during the pre-game ceremony. See what it is like to stand down in the stadium and look up at 50,000 seats that hold your cheering fans!  THE TOP SELLER will receive a San Jose Earthquakes Autographed T-Shirt…and finally, and this is a biggie… If the school as a whole sells 300+ tickets THE TOP 8 SELLERS will get a group photo with the team mascot “Q” and the SJ Earthquake Shakers. The whole school will get a visit from a player next year for a “GET FIT” assembly! So, let’s all go to the game because if each Roosevelt family only buys 2 tickets, we would have sold 500+ tickets and exceeded all of our goals.

What better way to support your school then taking the family out for an awesome night of professional soccer? Sales start NOW so get your order forms in early as the sale ends May 30th.
