CST and Benchmark Testing…
Testing time is here! CST Testing begins this week for grades 2 -6 and other students will be taking Benchmark tests. Please make sure your child is on time each day. Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast each day as well. They’ll be testing in the morning, so a good breakfast will help them concentrate. Talk about the importance of doing their best and remind them to take their time and check their work. Make sure they go to bed on time – 8:30pm at the latest! Students do better when they are fully rested. Have your child relax each day after school. Finally, give them encouragement to do their best!

Roosevelt Expansion Update…
The district’s Grade Configuration Committee has voted and given their recommendations to the Superintendent and the School Board. The committee voted 20 to 5 in favor of Roosevelt becoming a K – 8 school offering Project Based Learning. Next, Superintendent Jan Christensen will give her recommendations to the school board and then the school board will vote on this as well as other recommendations that were put forth by the grade configuration committee. At last Wednesday’s board meeting, the school board expressed concern over the impact on programs at Kennedy since Henry Ford is requesting to add 6th grade and Taft is requesting K-8. The meeting was heavily attended by Kennedy parents and staff expressing their concern over Kennedy’s future. If you would like to address the board, you may do so at Wednesday’s board meeting. The school board vote is tentatively scheduled for the May 9 board meeting. All are welcome to attend and Spanish translation is available.

Roosevelt Facebook Page…
The district has created Facebook pages for each school in the district. The district wants to use these pages to get important school and district information out to families. The address for the district’s Roosevelt page is www.facebook.com/pages/Roosevelt-Elementary-School/214259038634327 If you “like” the page, you will automatically get any updates.

Rummage Sale…
Our Rummage Sale will also be a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5, 2012! Our PTA president, Aurora Gallardo needs help sorting and pricing the donated items that have been stored in the PTA room and selling booth space. Parents are also needed to help cook food for the festivities. 10×10 foot stalls are also available to rent by anyone that wants to sell at the rummage sale so ask family and friends if they want to rent a stall.

For more information, please contact Aurora at aurora.gallardo@star-vista.org

Box Tops…
We have one more Box Tops Contest running this year – you have raised almost $800 for our school, just by turning in BoxTops!

We are hoping for some small prize donations for our last contest of the year.  We are going to offer raffle tickets for every 5 box tops that are turned in, and that raffle ticket will allow the child to win a prize.  We are hoping to collect some prizes from our parents – movie tickets, small gift cards to Corner Yogurt or Jamba Juice, Target, Lego sets, cool books in English and Spanish – be creative!  If you have a prize you can donate, please send an email to megan.goulden@gmail.com.

Parcel Tax Phone Banking…
The parcel tax committee has assigned Roosevelt to 2 phone bank nights for Measure W (the parcel tax).   We need 20 people per night and they are fun and easy.   All we do is call people to understand whether they are supporters or not.   No convincing required!

Our second scheduled Phone Bank night is Thursday, May 10 from 5:30-8:30pm.   Send an email to Dave Goulden at  dave.goulden@gmail.com  or click here to sign-up directly on the website.  To read the latest on Measure W go to Redwood City Community for Better Schools.

RCEF Benefit…
Tickets are now on sale for the RCEF’s Benefit for a Brighter Future to be held on May 4, 2012 at 5:30pm at the Pacific Shores Club. For more information about the event, go to www.benefitforabrighterfuture.org. To learn more about what the RCEF does for our schools, go to www.rcef.org

Ballot Initiative…
Elections are coming up and I’ll pass along anything related to education funding as I get information so that we can all make informed decisions.

The first one I’ll pass along is a ballot initiative called Our Children, Our Future. This ballot initiative is supported by the California State PTA. If passed, this measure proposes to raise $10 to $11 billion annually in new revenue through a sliding scale income tax increase that varies with taxpayers’ ability to pay. Organizers are in the process of collecting signatures to put it on the ballot, so take a look at their website for more information — www.ourchildrenourfuture2012.com

Have a great week!
