Reclassification ceremony at MIT at 5:00pm for all ELL students that passed the CELDT and are now classified as English proficient. 33 Roosevelt students are being reclassified at Monday night’s ceremony
Rummage Sale Planning Meeting at 6:00pm in the faculty lounge – Room 14.
Tuesday, March 27
PTA meeting at 6:00pm in the Faculty Lounge (Room 14). Items to discuss – Parcel tax PTA donation, upcoming rummage sale, field trips, budget update, etc. All are welcome to attend and Spanish translation is also available. Free childcare is offered in the YMCA room.
Friday, March 30
Drop off your plastic bottles and cans at Room 19 for the 5th grade fundraiser!

Drop off and Pick up News…
The new drop off zone on Vera Avenue is starting to ease drop off and pick up traffic. Please pay attention to the new loading zone areas and drive down Vera from Alameda de las Pulgas to use the drop zones. The drop off zone times are 7:30am to 8:30am and then 1:00pm to 3:00pm on school days. Students are to be dropped off and picked up in this area. The curb on Euclid will also be painted white and drop zone signs added after approval from the city. The staff parking spaces will be repainted when the weather clears up. If you normally drive up Vera, you need to drive up Madison and make a Left on to Winslow and then a left on to Vera to use the drop zone.
5th Grade Recycling Fundraiser…
The 5th graders are trying to raise some money for their week at Outdoor Education and are holding a recycling fundraiser. If you’d like to participate, please bring smashed plastic bottles and cans to school on Friday, March 30 and leave them outside Room 19. The 5th graders thank you for your support!
On the Parent Blog…
Two 4th graders wrote entries for the blog this week. One post is about Saturday Academy and the other is about the Art Club. I’ve posted pictures from the 2nd graders’ People Who Make a Difference presentations, and the 1st graders working on their Me On the Map projects and their field trip to the Geological Survey Dept. If your child wants to write something about what’s going on in their classroom or an after school activity, please let me know and I’ll be happy to post it. Spring Drama Camp…
TheatreWorks is offering a drama camp for students in K-6 during Spring Break week (April 2 – April 6). Students will get to experience drama, music, movement, puppetry, juggling, singing and acting! The camp is being offered at a reduced rate of $190 for the 9am-3pm camp. Rummage Sale…
Our Rummage Sale will be combined with a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5, 2012! Our PTA president, Aurora Gallardo needs help sorting and pricing the donated items that have been stored in the PTA room and selling booth space. Parents are also needed to help cook a Mexican meal for the festivities. — Carnes asada, frijoles (beans), arroz (rice), elote (corn) and nachos

Parcel Tax Phone Banking…
The parcel tax committee has assigned Roosevelt to 2 phone bank nights for Measure W (the parcel tax). We need 20 people per night and they are fun and easy. All we do is call people to understand whether they are supporters or not. No convincing required!
Lice…
Just thinking about it makes me itch, but it’s important that we all know what to look for and how to treat it to keep any outbreak at school to a minimum. If your child has been exposed to lice, put on a pair of disposable gloves and place your child’s head under a bright light for examination. Start at the base of your child’s neck, behind the ears, then along the forehead, and at the crown. Lift small sections of hair in your fingers and work your way methodically around the entire head. You’ll want to look out for adult lice and nits, which are egg sacks. Live lice are about the size of a sesame seed and are grayish-white or tan. Nits are tiny yellow, tan, or brown dots that look a lot like dandruff and are usually located, at most, a few inches from the scalp. If you’re unsure, try flicking the hair — if it moves, it’s dandruff; if it doesn’t, it’s a nit. Scrape it off with your fingernails, look for more, and start thinking about treatment. Volunteering…
On the purple sheets that were turned in about what all of you loved about Roosevelt, parent after parent responded that they love the Roosevelt community. Ms. Girardi and the PTA want to make our community even stronger by asking for help with specific events by grade level. You may have noticed that this has started already. Kinder parents were asked to help with the Book Fair and this week 2nd Grade parents were asked to help with Author Night. This is not only a way to make sure that the same people are not being called upon to volunteer for every event, but it’s also a way for you as parents to meet and get to know the other parents in your child’s class and grade. Every grade has at least 60 families that can potentially help with each event and if every family committed to helping out just once during the year, the PTA could do amazing things for the students at Roosevelt!
