Make sure to mark your calendars for the following events at Roosevelt this week:

Free Dress Friday!

Coffee with Principal Girardi in the school Library at 8:00am. Please come and meet with Principal Girardi over a cup of coffee. Hear first hand about district and school news, talk about any issues or concerns you may have or just come for the coffee or to meet other Roosevelt parents! All are welcome to attend and Spanish translation is available. If you are a Kindergarten parent with a Later Gator or have a younger child, you are welcome to bring your child.

As part of a PBL Science unit, the 6th graders have been working with TheatreWorks on a skit about plate tectonics. They will be giving a performance on Friday, February 3 at 6:00pm for their families in the Cafeteria. All are welcome to attend.

On the Parent Blog…
I’m still posting some of the wonderful parent quotes (Ms. Girardi received over 300!), so see if yours has been posted yet! They’ve been posted in a ticker on the right side of the page. I also have pictures to post from last Friday’s awards assemblies, but I wasn’t able to attend all of the assemblies and some pictures that I do have are a bit blurry. If anyone has pictures that I can post, let me know so that I can add them.

Do You Have a Smartphone?…
I was able to make a smartphone friendly version of the blog for anyone logging in via a smartphone. So make sure to bookmark our parent blog on your phone and then you can check out what’s going on anytime!

Monthly Pledges…
The January pledge reminders were sent out last week for January, so please send in your donations. Also, if you would like a receipt for any monetary donations made to the PTA since August, please send a request to Guy Taylor at guytaylor123@yahoo.com

After School Art Class…
Thanks to our PTA’s grant writer, Tammy Cattarin, Roosevelt has received a grant for Mrs Tsuchiyama to offer an 8 week art class for students in grades 3-6 on Wednesday afternoons starting on February 22. Flyers will be going home this week and space is limited to 30 students, so sign up right away if you’re interested in this wonderful opportunity.

Movie Night!…
Roosevelt’s PTA will be celebrating Mardi Gras and Carnival by presenting the movie RIO! So come and enjoy the fun! Doors open at 6:30pm for popcorn, candy and hot chocolate and the movie begins at 7:00pm. More details to come about activities that will be happening during the week leading up to movie night but mark your calendars now. Our movie nights are always so much fun and a great way to end the week! If you can help with any part of the evening, please contact Kim Schiff at kbschiff@sbcglobal.net

Please Drive Safely…
There have been several near accidents around the school in the past few weeks, and the school is working with the district and city to create a drop off zone. The school is looking for volunteers to help supervise morning drop off. If you are interested, please contact the school office at 369-5597. In the meantime you can do the following to make it safer for everyone. Please remember to use extra caution when driving around the school. Make sure to look carefully and proceed slowly before pulling out of a space or before passing another car that has pulled to the curb for drop off. Have your children only get out of the car on the passenger side – not into the street. Have your children use the crosswalk to cross from the Rite Aid parking lot or cross with the crossing guard in front of the school on Vera. Above all, allow yourself extra time in the morning.

Save the Date…
Our Rummage Sale’s rescheduled date has been confirmed and it will now be combined with a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5, 2012! Our PTA president, Aurora Gallardo needs help sorting and pricing the donated items that have been stored in the PTA room and selling booth space. If you can help, please contact Aurora at aurora.gallardo@star-vista.org

Volunteers Needed…
At Roosevelt, parents are asked to contribute 40 volunteer hours per year to the school. That is only 4 hours per month.

Who needs your help?

– Teachers in the classroom during the day or at home at night and for parties and on field trips
– PTA to sort items for the rummage sale and at the sale
– PTA to set up or clean up and sell food items at Family Fun Nights
– Garden Committee with the garden and flowerbeds
– Our librarian in the library, with EWASTE events or Book Fairs
– Other parents who help stuff the weekly envelopes

There are so many ways to help and these are just a few so just ask what you can do. We really need your help! And the more help we get, the more we can do for the kids!

Have a great week!
